PICK UP ETIQUETTE
What is a CSA
CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture which is a subscription service for local produce. The consumer directly pays a local farmer in advance and in full, for a weekly delivery of fresh fruits, vegetables, flowers, etc. The delivery takes place at a predetermined time and location every week.
What are the benefits of a CSA
Locally produced food which eliminates many tons of greenhouse emissions, as well as many other health benefits. Most CSAs are organic or nearly organic, including ours which is 100% organic, naturally grown, and pesticide free.Organic farming eleminates pesticide use, agricultural run off, and produces overall healthier food.Everything is extremely fresh (picked 1 or 2 days before delivery, however it's usually the same day), and tasty (heirloom variety vegetables are known for their oustanding flavor). The local farmer(s) receive a living wage and the community shares in crop losses and windfalls. The money stays in the local economy.CSA Members get exposed to new types and varieties of produce. No shopping...The veggies are delivered to a specified location weekly.
Who and where is Crooked Sky Farms
Crooked Sky Farms is a Certified Naturally Grown farm owned by Frank Martin, located right in the heart of South Phoenix. Crooked Sky Farms uses absolutely NO synthetic chemical insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, or fertilizers on their crops. They care for the soil, water, and air quality with crop rotations, cover crops, protective buffer crops, and ecologically sustainable farming practices. Crooked Sky Farms grows and supplies fresh produce for several Farmer's Markets and CSAs throughout the state of Arizona. Feel free to read more about Crooked Sky Farms on their website.
What are Tempe CSA's Season dates

When and where do I pick up my share
Produce pick up is every Thursday from 1600-1900 (4-7 PM) in the Fellowship Hall of the Community Christian Church located at 1701 S. College Ave, Tempe, AZ 85281.
What type of produce will I get
Each week, 8 different types of seasonal vegetables, fruits, nuts, flowers, and/or grains are delivered. The idenities and overall quantities change seasonally and weekly, based on what is ready for harvest at the farm. Here is an example of a weekly share: 1 melon, 3 onions, 2 squash, 4 eggplant, 1 bag of roasted chiles, 1 basket of tomatoes, 1 bag of salad greens, 1 bunch of beets.Check out the HARVEST LIST of our family members at the Tucson CSA to get a more complete idea of whats in season.
Will my produce have dirt on it
YES
I dont like X what can I do
Each week you will have the option to trade any item that you don't care for with any item on our Trade In table. At the beginning of the pick up one full share is deposited on the Trade In table for members to make adjustments to their share. Keep in mind that you can only trade your unwanted item with the items that are on the Trade In table. Additionally, if there is nothing on the Trade In table that you want to trade your unwanted item(s) for then you can always donate the item at our Surplus Table for any of your fellow members to enjoy.
How local and fresh is it
The produce is usually picked within 24-48 hours of delivery. The weekly deliveries come from Crooked Sky Farms located right in South Phoenix. For much of the year most of the food travels less than 20 miles. However, during the hot summer months, much of the food comes from Duncan, AZ which is less than 200 miles away. Compare that to the average American meal which travels about 1300 miles before consumption.
Is it organic
Yes, Crooked Sky Farms grows all of their food organically, without the use of pesticides and fertilizers. The farm is 100% organic and is Certified Naturally Grown. However, please note that the farm is not USDA Certified Organic since this is a time consuming, costly, and difficult process. If you would like to learn more about Certified Naturally Grown please visit their website by clicking here.

PICK UP ETIQUETTE
FAQ
PICK UP ETIQUETTE
PICK UP ON TIME
Please pick up on time. If you can't pick up during the scheduled time, ask a friend to pick up your share for you. If you are traveling or away for an extended period, please feel free to implement any of the following options:Donate your share to a fellow member or friend during your absenceSell your share (online sites like craigslist or ebay may prove helpful). Donate your share to the Surplus TablePlease let the site facilitator know regardless of your choice.
BRING YOUR OWN CONTAINER
Bring your bags, boxes, backpacks, laundry baskets, tennis bags, panniers, old t-shirts, pack mules or whatever you need to haul your bounty of veggies home.
Check your name off on the Tempe CSA Sign In Sheet located at the beginning of the produce line. Doing this also allows you to receive communication from us should that be necessary.
HANDLE GENTLY
Please handle the produce as little as possible. Heirloom vegetables are bred for flavor, and not necessarily for looks or shelf-life. So please do not pick through the items to get the "best-looking" ones, as repeated handling causes them to bruise and subsequently spoil easily. The amount of produce available on any given pick up day is weighed and counted to be divided evenly among all shares. Share portions of loose items are pre-bagged, and counts are specific. This avids the need for weighing and extra handling on-site.
COLLECT YOUR ENTIRE SHARE
Please take no more or no less than your entire share. When you take more, you take from someone elses share. When you take less, you create leftovers. If there is something you don't want, you will have the opportunity to trade it via the Trade In Table or donate it for your fellow members to enjoy via the Surplus Table. Signs are posted to let you know which table is which.
TRADE IN TABLE
An entire share is placed on the Trade In table at the beginning of the pick-up to give you an option to trade in the items you don't want for potentially more of what you do want. There are no limitations on how many items you can exchange, however, you can ONLY exchange your unwanted items with items on the Trade In table. So if all of the "good stuff" is gone (depending on your preference), then you can either keep your unwanted items or donate them at the Surplus Table. Please remember that your favorite veggie will not always be available. You are supporting the diversity of farm produce, which supports the health of the soil, the farmer, and yourself. Use this opportunity to try new, heirloom, and climate/environmentally appropriate crops! Please trade whole portions only, NO partial trades. For example: you're welcome to trade an entire portion of onions (lets say its 3 onions) for an entire portion of citrus (lets say its 2 oranges). Please do NOT trade 1 of the 3 onions for 1 of the 2 oranges.
SURPLUS TABLE
If you don't want something that is in your share and there is nothing that you want to trade it with at the Trade In Table, then feel free to leave it at the Surplus Table for another members enjoyment. Unlike the items at the Trade In Table, surplus goodies are free for all and may include farm extras, leftovers from a previous pick up, surplus from member's gardens, or unwanted items from member's shares.
